Wood Art Sculptures are amazing

Creating something eye-catching and interesting, maybe even useful, is an enjoyable challenge that keeps driving innovation and fun!

Starting out with a block of wood and releasing what is hidden within it is an amazing creative activity. The wood often gives tremendous opportunities to be creative, but you often have to go with what the wood will give you because of grain structure and the design of whatever you have motivating your creation. The minimal surface sculpture opposite is a fortunate intersection of math meeting art.

Disk Sculpture with brass, epoxy

Maple Burl, Epoxy and Brass Disk

This 16x13x3 sculpture started as an experiment to see what could be made with a thin burl cap with lots of bark inclusions and voids. I then wanted to see how it would be turning brass on a wood lathe with standard chisels. What do you think?

Sculptures can be useful as well as ornamental

This “Splashbowl” nightlight of carved walnut and stained epoxy is an example of a merging of several ideas and materials to come up with something unique and soothing for a child’s bedroom, or even in the corner of a quiet reading room.

Even solid objects can have secrets hidden within when you shine a light in the right places.
